How do I know if I have cervical cancer or abnormal cervical cells?

Precancers and early cancers usually have no symptoms. They often are first discovered at a more advanced stage of disease.13 Cervical cancer and abnormal cells are detected through Pap testing.1

The Pap test is currently one of the best ways to help detect abnormal cervical cells and cervical cancer.1

Signs may be noticed when cancer grows and invades nearby tissue. The most common symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding that comes at a different time from your menstrual period or is heavier than usual. Pain during intercourse can also suggest cervical cancer. However, these signs can also indicate other conditions besides cancer.13 It's best to see your health-care professional to determine the cause of your symptoms.
