Managing HIV Disease: Getting the Most from Your Therapy

NRTIs: Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors

The NRTI group includes many of the older anti-HIV medications. Of these, AZT is probably the most familiar.

Drugs within this group:

  • PrRetrovir® (AZT or zidovudine)
  • PrVidex™ (ddI or didanosine)
  • PrHivid® (ddC or zalcitabine/dideoxycytidine)
  • PrZerit™ (d4T or stavudine)
  •   Pr3TC® (lamivudine)
  • Pr Ziagen™ (abacavir)

What NRTIs do:

  • A combination of NRTI drugs is often the first treatment doctors prescribe for HIV.
  • Reverse transcriptase is a substance that enables HIV to establish itself inside infected cells. NRTIs inhibit the actions of this substance, blocking an important early step in the HIV-copying process.
